Sentineo - EMC Pre-Compliance

Sentineo addressed EMC pre-compliance issues with custom EMC patches

An international electronics equipment manufacturer engaged Sentineo to ensure electromagnetic compatibility compliance (EMC) for a product upgrade, refining the design to prevent EM interference. Sentineo follows a proven approach—encompassing an EMC pre-compliance test, failure point identification, and design of custom patches if needed — to effectively address EMC challenges that would otherwise compromise pre-compliance certification. For this project, Sentineo designed a low-cost custom filter circuit that significantly reduced electromagnetic emissions, as shown in comparative graphs. It enabled the manufacturer to seamlessly integrate it into existing electronics. Sentineo’s pre-compliance services offer a strategic, cost-effective investment that mitigates future risks and expenses.

Expert insights to master EMC challenges

While upgrading one of its popular electronic equipment models, an international manufacturer enlisted Sentineo’s expertise to prepare for EMC compliance testing. Sentineo provided guidance in pre-compliance testing and refining the electronic design to be fully ready for a successful EMC compliance test in an accredited lab.

Legislation requires all electronic products to demonstrate compliance with EMC standards. Specialized EMC test labs provide suitable testing environments but in general do not offer advice or solutions to identified EMC issues. Sentineo does both—conducting tests in accredited labs with anechoic chambers while providing expert guidance and implementing solutions when needed.

Sentineo takes a proven approach to EMC pre-compliance testing. Piet Callemeyn, Owner of Sentineo, explains: “We begin by conducting a full EMC pre-compliance testing procedure in the EMC test lab in an anechoic chamber and make a detailed technical report to pinpoint failure points or performance gaps. Using these insights and our expertise, we help our customers develop electronic patches if needed to solve critical issues and to ensure successful EMC compliance afterwards in the accredited lab.”

For this project, Sentineo designed a custom electronics filter system that significantly reduces the product’s electromagnetic emissions, as evidenced by the comparative graphs.

The electromagnetic emissions of the upgraded product, measured across frequency (MHz), are shown before (above) and after (below) Sentineo’s EMC pre-compliance project. In the left graph, emission peaks (dBµV) exceed the EMC quasi-peak and average limits, leading to test failure. The right graph highlights the filter’s attenuation effect, significantly reducing electromagnetic field intensity and ensuring readiness for EMC compliance.

Eliminate risks in achieving EMC compliance

The fact that nearly 50% of new products fail their first EMC compliance test underscores the critical need to analyze EMC-related issues. This is due to the complexity of predicting emissions, navigating regulations, and engineering teams’ natural focus on core product functions. Piet Callemeyn summarizes: “Sentineo brings expertise and a proven approach to help companies meet EMC requirements for their products, regardless of their internal EMC knowledge. This is no luxury: it prevents costly retests, budget overruns, and delayed product launches.”
