Sentineo developed a custom bi-directional 1.5kW charger / 800W inverter for MyGrid’s award-winning ModuleOne home battery. Leveraging its specialized expertise, Sentineo realized this unique custom charger/inverter, marking a world first at these high power levels and compact form factor.
Throughout an intense collaborative journey, Sentineo rubbed shoulders with MyGrid to validate their prototype’s performance and architecture and transform it into a product that is compact, safe, and ready for mass production. This charger/inverter is a critical component in MyGrid’s portable ModuleOne solution, which easily plugs into a standard electrical outlet. This innovative home energy solution significantly reduces energy bills and carbon footprints, without the hassle, cost and certification associated with a permanent installation.
A smart, portable power solution
MyGrid set out with the idea of developing a compact, portable home battery that lets users manage their energy smartly and conveniently. They use the device to charge electricity during off-peak hours or at work and supply energy during peak hours or when electricity is unavailable. Its true portability and plug-and-play nature make it perfect for tenants and eco-conscious individuals, even without solar panels. The ModuleOne can be simply plugged into a standard electrical outlet.
Sentineo came into the picture after MyGrid’s initial prototype was complete. The partnership began with a feasibility study, providing insights into electronic system designs and production costs. Following a successful Kickstarter campaign, fully funded with 125 orders, the focus shifted to developing the custom bidirectional charger/inverter.
The world’s first compact bidirectional charger/inverter
Sentineo developed a pioneering charger/inverter, operating at 400VDC and high power, all within an ultra-compact design.The smart use of materials and component positioning allowed efficient cooling and optimal performance. By using the same components for both charging and inversion, Sentineo saved space and increased efficiency. This approach eliminates the need for duplicate circuits, thereby minimizing the number of components and efficiently utilizing the limited space available.
This high-performing custom bi-directional charger/inverter is safely contained within the disk-shaped base unit of the compact ModuleOne. Sentineo’s experience with power electronics applications, including high-power PFC (power factor correction) implementations such as onboard three-phase vehicle chargers, ensured the product met MyGrid’s ecological and practical standards.
Winning the ‘Henry van de Velde’ and ‘Red Dot Design’ awards is a testament to MyGrid’s commitment to innovative, sustainable, and aesthetically rich design.
